Kung Fu

Kung Fu is a magic thing and in Chinese it is “功夫”. Kung Fu has been translated as “Martial Arts” for a long time. Kung Fu, in short, is a special skill in Chinese Kung Fu novel. Here are some main features about Kung Fu.

1.the skill of “Quan”(Boxing,拳)

In Chinese Kung Fu Novel, Quan has many many type and it is a basic skill that every “Kung Fu”er need to gain. In Jacky Chan’s famous movie, the name of its move is one type of “Quan”-“Zui Quan”(using the skill of Quan after drinking).

2.the skill of moving swiftly

It is another basic skill. The people who has such skill can cross high wall and disappear in a second in front of you. In the popular move “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, the role acted by Zi-Yi Zhang once had a contest of such skill with Run-Fa Zhou.

Shi Fu

The Kung Fu Panda Po called his teacher of Kung Fu “Shi Fu”. In Chines Kung Fu novel, everyone who has the skill of Kung Fu has a Shi Fu. Sometimes, one can have more than one Shi Fu. Shi Fu is the one who teach you skill of Kong Fu. Normally, Shi Fu gives all he learned from his Shi Fu to his “Tu Di”(student, 徒弟). And Chinese Kong Fu is transferred by such a way.

To-Fu

In the movie of Kung Fu Panda, the term “To-Fu” once appeared and you may wonder what is it. Its the literal translation is bean curd . To-Fu is a food of Chinese origin, made by coagulating soy milk, and then pressing the resulting curds into blocks.

The Word “Fu”

You may have noticed that the three words all end with “Fu”. However, they are not the same word. In “Kung Fu” and “Shi Fu”, the word Fu refers to “夫” in Chinese, while it refers to “腐” in “To-Fu”. In Chinese, there are always words which have the same pronunciation.
